Protection

In 2015, Mount Kunlun UNESCO Global Geopark Plan (2016-2025) plans 10 geoheritage reserves. It covers an area of 750.82km2, accounting for 10.67% of the total. Its boundaries are delineated according to factors such as the grade of geoheritage assessment, distribution characteristics, and natural landforms.
       Grade I protection area:
The total area of the grade I geoheritage reserve is 195.43km2, accounting for 2.78% of the total.

       (1) The Yuzhu Peak grade I geoheritage reserve is 78.51km2, accounting for 1.12% of the total. The core area of the Modern Glaciers of Yuzhu Peak in the main protection geopark;

       (2) West Queen Jade Pool grade I geoheritage reserve is 38.74km2, accounting for 0.55% of the total. It mainly protects the waters of the West Queen Jade Pool;

      (3) The Jingxian Valley grade I geoheritage reserve is 41.20km2, accounting for approximately 0.59% of the total. It mainly protects the earthquake relics and periglacial landform on the eastern side of the Jingxian Valley; 
      
      (4) The Yuxu Peak grade I geoheritage reserve is 36.98km2, accounting for approximately 0.53% of the total. It mainly protects the Modern Glaciers of Yuxu Peak and periglacial landform;


  Grade II protection area:
The total area of the grade II geoheritage reserve is 290.14km2, accounting for 4.13 % of the park area.
       (1) Xidatan grade II geoheritage reserve is 125.44km2, accounting for approximately 1.78% of the total. It mainly protects the ancient glacial landforms under the Yuzhu Peak and the Mineral Water Source at Yuzhu Peak.

       (2) West Queen Jade Pool grade II geoheritage reserve is 155.80km2, accounting for 2.22% of the total. It mainly protects the lacustrine deposits around the Jade Pool and the Jade Pool visual influence region.  

       (3) Xueshui River grade II geoheritage reserve is 8.89km2, accounting for 0.13% of the total. It mainly protects angular unconformity boundary, state-level geoheritages of angular fold, and scenic reaches of the Xueshui River.


  Grade III protection area:
The total area of the grade III geoheritage reserve is 264.62km2, accounting for 3.76% of the park area.

      (1) Wild Yak Valley grade III geoheritage reserve is 127.76km2, accounting for approximately 1.82% of the total. It mainly protects the unexploited geoheritages such as braided rivers, swamp wetlands and Censer Peak in the Wild Yak Valley;

      (2) Wild Yak Valley Sand Sea grade III geoheritage reserve is 76.74km2, accounting for approximately 1.09% of the total. It mainly protects the geoheritage such as the large sand sea in the park;

      (3) The Naij Tal grade III geological relic reserve is 60.12km2, accounting for approximately 0.84% of the total. It mainly protects geoheritage such as the Kunlun Holy Spring and Najitai ice moraine.
