In January 2001, Golmud Kunlun Tourist Area was rated as an AAAA national tourist attraction by the National Tourism Administration. It mainly contains Mount Kunlun, Salt Lake, Yardang Landform, Populus euphratica forest, Ethnic customs park and other tourist attractions.
In December 2003, Golmud City was entitled "Chinese Outstanding Tourism City."
In September 2005, Golmud Mount Kunlun was approved by the Ministry of Land and Resources as a national geopark.
In early 2005, Qinghai Hydrogeology Geological, Engineering Geological and Environmental Geological Survey Institute adjusted and modified the scope and functional zoning of the park, and finally identified the main protection targets and scope of the geopark.
In August 2005, the Mount Kunlun Geopark was approved as a national geopark in the review meeting held by Beijing Ministry of Land and Resources;
In August 2008, the inauguration of the Mount Kunlun National Geologic Park in Qinghai was completed and the park was officially opened;
At the end of 2011, the Mount Kunlun Geopark initiated the application for the Global Geopark. In the same year, it won the 2014 Global Geopark Candidate Qualification;
In September 2014, Mount Kunlun Geopark passed the assessment by experts of the Global Geopark Network and became China's 30th Global Geopark, namely the Mount Kunlun Global Geopark in Qinghai, China;
From May to June 2015, the Geopark & Geoheritage Research Center, Sichuan, CHN carried out surveys on the geoheritages in the Geopark and discovered more than 120 geoheritages;
In October 2015, the Mount Kunlun Global Geopark in Qinghai, China was inaugurated and opened to the public.
